Planet Earth is under attack from its own people. Their leaders poison the environment and control the ignorant through lies and fear. The Dark Menace uses these lies to accelerate the chaos and feeds off the blood of its victims. Magnus, patriarch of the Milky Way, afraid that an overheated Earth will endanger the Cosmos, decides to interfere in Earth's development and chooses a fifteen-year-old Earthling named Maya to be his emissary. Descended from mystics, Maya is being groomed to replace her grandmother as Priestess. Once Maya becomes aware of her destiny she overcomes her fear and assumes the mantle of the Warrior Priestess. And the battle between good and evil begins. I received the genesis of this story from my husband, radio and TV pioneer, Ralph Story, three months after he died, and consider him my ghostwriter. "A fantasy for all ages. I love the characters; they incorporate humor, tragedy and triumph. I couldn't put it down. Great movie material." Rona Barrett - former TV-film reporter and critic.

Too often I find that books looking to make a point do so in such dry, preachy, predictable ways that t he message gets lost in my frustration. That is NOT the case with Maya's Story. This is a magical coming of age story is filled with humor and charm and rollicking action - but is also a cautionary tale of exceptional value. I often wonder how the human race might appear to others, so I was particularly taken by the Constellations, who in this book observe Earth from afar with growing concern. Here, the stars are given voice and unique personalities as they fret and frown about the awful things we do to ourselves, to each other, and to the planet we temporarily inhabit. They’ve set their sights on Maya, a fifteen year old who, if she succumbs to arduous training, might be able to lead us out of the muck.Maya's story charms us with dragons, unicorns, and delightful derring-do while it exposes severely harsh truths. The characters (all of them exceptionally drawn) are fictional, but the dangers are not. The teenage protagonist, a second cousin to Joan of Arc and Buffy the Vampire Slayer, is complex and real enough to be any of our daughters or nieces. The characters that support her, young or older, are also recognizable - they could be any of us. The forces she battles are insidious and disgusting - again, the author hits very close to home.
So while we endure a racist, sexist, climate change-denying bully in the White House, this book reminds us that we cannot sit and wait for this evil wind to pass as the waters rise. The dangers are real, the situation is dire, and our responsibility to act of utmost urgency. That Ms. Story has chosen to raise the alarm through this marvelous novel is testament to her integrity, her talent, and her [legitimate] anxiety.

Maya Story Slipping Between Time and Space Diana Story 9781542660556 Books Reviews
“In her debut novel, Diana Story reveals a limitless imagination, deep scholarship, and story-telling giftedness. The journey we take with her 15-year-old heroine, Maya, carries us deep into a cosmic adventure, in which private thoughts, heart-healing relationships, mystical histories, mindless evil, and a tenacious fight for good all funnel into a focused blueprint of practical ideas about how to heal our tortured planet! I’ve never read anything quite like this. Ms. Story is a student of history, geography, myth and science; her humor, empathy, and vision have introduced us to a literary form that is both a page-turning novel and a half-formed screenplay. It’s a uniquely worthy story, on its way to being a marvelous film.” Stephanie Edwards, Television Commentator/Host
A timely fantasy which not only held my attention with plot surprises, attention to detail and memorable characters, but also lifted my spirits as I followed a brave young heroine as she prepares to tackle the "darknesses" of our planet and its people, issues with which we are all too familiar in our real world of complex problems and dangers, with many of us trying hard to do what we can to help. The way in which she gives herself to her project and throws herself toward what she must do is inspirational. Once the story begins to head toward its climax, I was unable to put it down. A first novel that makes me want to know what will follow. I agree with other reviewers that this fantasy novel would be well-suited to movie adaptation.
A FANTASTICAL ADVENTURE
Prepare to be swept into a tale of magic, mystery and myth as Maya and her friends battle to save the planet from an evil energy. Time travel to sacred sites around the world and experience Maya's education in a parallel univerese. The bond between Maya and her grandmother brought me to tears. There is love, hate and sacrifice. I couldn't put it down but I didn't want it to end. Spoiler alert...this book talks about global warming and other catastrophes. In other words it's a fantasy for realists.

Maya’s Story, Slipping Between Time and Space, by Diana Story is a contemporary allegory about the struggle between destructive dark forces and the positive light of the cosmos. A young girl, Maya, has been chosen by Magnus, the supreme ruler of the constellations to become the leader of the epic struggle against the Dark Menace. Maya’s grandmother, Vida, is High Priestess of the Sisterhood. Vida has great power but realizes that it is time for Maya to become the leader of the fight to save the earth which is endangered through global warming. The constellations have identities and each can lend a hand in helping Maya to defeat the dark forces that threaten to take over the planet. There are dragons, unicorns and lions ready to help Maya survive the ordeal. It seems that the entire cosmos is endangered because of the failure of the humans on planet earth to govern wisely. Maya is only fifteen years old, and she questions whether she is strong enough to complete the vigorous initiations and challenges that she must endure in order to lead the upcoming battle.
I am a senior woman and was surprised to see the way I identified with Maya, the young heroin of this wonderful book. I guess I am still a young kid at heart. All of the detail the author put into the various initiations that Maya needed to complete was well developed. Maya was totally ready for her job as Priestess.
I found it inspiring to see how Ms. Story brought the problems our world is facing today into the mix and made this young Priestess know that she was to fight the evil in the world. She was representing the good not only in the world but the universe and galaxy as well.
I can see this book taking off and being made into a series of several episodes for a t.v. It could be the next "Gravity Falls" . video Games, cartoon episodes, motion graphics could play a great part in the development of a film.
