Product Description
This is H A Culley’s third historical novel about the Norman period. The young Malcolm IV of Scotland is no match for Henry Plantagenet of England but when Malcolm dies aged twenty two his brother, William the Lyon, proves to be a much stronger king of the volatile Scots. The loss of Northumberland, of which his father was earl, has always rankled with William so, when Henry II’s sons rise in rebellion on the Continent, William seizes the chance to invade; a decision which was to have disastrous consequences for Scotland for the next two centuries.
This turbulent period of history is brought to life through the tale of two branches of the same family – the de Cuilles – who are divided by the River Tweed; one branch living in Northumberland and the other on the Scottish side of the border. They prosper until the disastrous Battle of Alnwick, after which both families suffer misfortune and tragedy, which they overcome in different ways. Intertwined in the plot is the tale of Robert of Locksley, the outlaw of Sherwood Forest, who is eventually forced to flee the forest and seek refuge in the borderlands.

The challenge of this book is keeping track of all the different names. I basically decided that I would not try and found that it was still an interesting readWell I'm sure that the author had to fill in a lot of the blanks with his historical fiction insights it was an interesting way to learn more about the reign of Henry the second
Most of the book focuses on the border between Scotland and England and the ongoing conflicts that happened during this time.
I came away with a much clearer picture of what life must of been like for knights, squires, constables and sheriffs on the border during this time.

Caging the Lyon The Normans Book 3 edition by H A Culley Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Loved this book, the entire series is awesome. Real good story telling and character development. Great job, H A, just wish it was longer and had more to read. Recommend for everybody to read.
I really enjoyed all three of Mr. Culley's The Normans books and look forward to reading the latest. Interesting characters, does a great job of covering very complicated times, great details, excellent battle scenes.
This was a great book. You need to read the first two before this one. Hard to keep the family relationships straight without. But it seems true to the next generations after the Norman Conquest and held my interest to the end.
If you read this review, I hope you are already a Culley fan...if not, please read his earlier books before you enjoy this one. Mr. Culley is a polished author who knows his subject matter extremely well. His books explore a period of English History not overworked by other writers. His prose flows easily from the pages of his work; his characters are interesting; and, his plot speeds you through this turmulturous time of anglo-saxon-norman British growth to become a powerful nation. When you find a high level historic knowledge coupled with top-notch storytelling you have indeed found a treasure.
Mr. Culley promises another book...King Richard and the crusades, I presume. Who will be left behind in Britain to harass Prince John while Richard is off to war....surely NOT Robin Hood!!!!!
If you purchase his books on , you will get an exceptional value for your investment!!! ENJOY!!!!!!
The story is very good. And it's historically accurate. Although the dialogue stumbles along in modern slang and often doesn't fit the characters well, it's readable. It's very poorly edited, full of typos and spelling errors, and not well formatted. If you don't mind that sort of thing, and you love Norman English history, you'll probably really enjoy this book.
Picked this up with no real promoting except the title and small summary regarding the creating of the Scottish royal flag of the red rampant lion on gold. It moves along quickly and is enjoyable. Personally I find it somewhat difficult to keep up with the number of names and their relationships, but it can't be helped ion most novels of this time period. Otherwise great and wouldn't mind seeing a film adaptation of some kind.
Malcom IV, King of Scotland, dies and his brother, William the Lyon, take the throne. The loss of the Earldom of Northumberland to the English always rankled William so when King Henry is occupied on the Continent in putting down a rebellion led by his sons, William seizes the opportunity to raise an army and take Northumberland back. Bad move, Billy. He is captured early in the Battle of Alnick and the disheartened Scots army heads back to the north from where it came. William is shipped cross channel to Falaise where he is forced to sign a non-negotiable treaty and take an oath that makes him little more than a vassal to Henry Plantagenet. He can't even marry without Henry's consent, has to cede more land and castles, has to pay for the English garrisons and can't raise an army. "In order to regain an earldom, I have lost a kingdom."
He is not the only one having problems during this turbulent period in history. While trying to condense 30 years of English history into a novel of a little over 200 pages, the author still finds time to weave in a number of interesting plots. The introduction of Robert of Locksley, an outlaw of Sherwood Forest, being one. One actual historical figure, Sir William Marshall, was mentioned a few times in the story. As one of the few knights that actually lived up to the code of chivalry and honor, I hope to see more of him in forthcoming novels.
I found this to be a very enjoyable and informative read. Certainly the battle scenes and tactics seemed accurate. Then there were the goings-on behind the scenes. I used to think that being Lord of the Manor would be a great job but now I realize that, at least in this period of time, it could be a tentative job at best.
